ieland Designs, through its sub-brand SIXINCH® USA, is transforming foam buns into innovative and high-fashion furniture installed in locations such as Google, Apple, SXSW, and Machine Gun Kelly’s 27 Club.
SIXINCH furniture was founded by two Belgians who were interested in creating progressive design furniture made from cut foam and coated with a polyurethane shell. In 2013, Wieland Design partnered with the founders and expanded the brand’s footprint into one of the most talked-about furniture brands in the world.
SIXINCH’s seating configurations range from collaborative spaces at university and schools to cutting-edge club lounges and high-tech workspaces. Regardless of the installation, “the way the furniture is created and can be customized is just cool,” said Brand Director Josh Taylor.
Local foam manufacturers cut the furniture from large foam buns. Some of the pieces are solid units, while others are cut into many pieces and glued up. Once the furniture is produced, it is shipped to the SIXINCH manufacturing plant in Goshen where a team completes the rest of the 3-step coating process.
The first spray booth is used to apply a webbing compound that is worked into the foam, giving it texture for the next process to properly adhere. The second spray booth is used to apply a proprietary mix of a A/B polyurethane, also branded as FlexPlus™. After that application, the team has a small window of time to apply the final paint layer for maximum durability. The paint SIXINCH uses is a automotive paint, which allows for flexibility and U.V. resistances. The pieces are then moved to a drying room where they sit before being labeled and packaged.
The end product is rated for high-traffic areas and can be used inside and outside. With thirty standard colors and custom colors available, SIXINCH furniture is a favorite for the hip and cool as well as hospitality, healthcare and office space environments.
Each FlexPlus coated piece is made-to-order with an 8-week lead time. SIXINCH’s sales channel is contract furniture and their main focus is on architects and designers who are working with the end-users for their built environments.
“We attract the attention and love of the design industry because we, along with the foam product, are extremely flexible and work hand-in- hand with designers to help make their ideas into reality,” Taylor said.
With the mission to provide endless creativity, SIXINCH is changing the way the world sees furniture.
